Our comprehensive exam is just what the name says: COMPREHENSIVE. This means we carefully examine all areas of your mouth to protect and preserve your oral health. These examinations include:
Oral Cancer Screening
More than 8,000 deaths were attributed to oral cancer in the past year. We are committed to the prevention of oral cancer and provide oral cancer screenings at each preventive care appointment.
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Sosa will examine your gum tissues to ensure we detect gum disease in its early stages.
Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Sosa uses both a clinical exam and x-ray (radiographic) findings to discover cavities and determine the most conservative treatment plan.
Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Sosa can review smile enhancing options to maximize the color, shape and alignment of your teeth.
Jaw Function and Bite Examination
TMJ Disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder) is a condition that afflicts thousands of people. Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Sosa has extensive training in diagnosing and treating TMJ disease to eliminate symptoms of this painful and frustrating problem.
Our doctors and hygienists examine the health of your teeth, gums, and bone with both digital x-rays and panoramic x-rays. Digital x-rays offer bigger, clearer images than traditional radiographs, and allow us to instantly show you the condition of your teeth. They also expose you to less radiation and are better for the environment because they produce less waste. Panoramic x-rays are ideal because they allow us to get a full and complete image of your teeth, head, neck and jaw. For patients being treated for TMJ, special x-rays of the joints can be taken allowing us to better diagnose and treat this condition.
Gum Disease Treatment
Scaling and root planing is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus (commonly called tartar) and plaque that attach to the tooth surfaces. The process especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root. This procedure is completed with local anesthetic for your comfort!
An effective antibiotic treatment that comes in powder form and can be used in areas where gum infection is more aggressive. This powder is placed inside infected periodontal pockets just after a scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure.
This procedure can be used at home or in our office to control the bacteria that causes periodontal disease. The gum tissue is bathed and flushed with an antibiotic preparation to promote healing of the gum tissue. Our hygienist can tell you how.

Fluoride applications help to strengthen the enamel on your teeth, crowns and fillings, making it more difficult for cavities to begin. Fluoride is also helpful to reduce pain and discomfort caused by exposed root surfaces (receding gums). Regular fluoride application can eliminate root sensitivity. Our patients have found it helpful to have a series of fluoride treatments to reduce their sensitivity, followed by possible at-home applications. One of our doctors or the hygienist will let you know if fluoride treatments would benefit you!!
Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and should be applied as a child’s permanent teeth erupt. Though typically placed on children’s teeth, adult molars can also be sealed, provided a tooth does not show evidence of decay. The sealants that we have placed have been highly successful in preventing decay.
